Polymer moisture crystals are a super absorbent material that help keep soils moist and loose in a container garden. They are easy to use, either for a new container or even an established garden.If filling a new container garden, use the label amount; Somewhere around 2 teaspoons per gallon of potting mix. The crystals will break down after 3 to 5 years, into nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water. When adding polymer crystals to an established garden or container, it is easier if you presoak the crystals so you can mix them in evenly. combine the crystals with water in a bucket. Once they have absorbed all the water, they will resemble chunks of Jello. They are then ready to mix with your soil, and into the container and garden. Try to mix in the top 6 inches of established beds. Another useful way to incorporate polymer crystals into your herb gardens, is to sprinkle some in the bottom of the herb plug or plant's hole, before inserting the herb plant. This will focus a moist area directly to the roots, while absorbing any excess water that might build up and cause the roots to decay. I use compost tea to soak my crystals in. This way, there is a fertilized area right next to the roots of the herb. Polymer crystals are a good idea for any gardener who wants to have better control over their watering systems, no matter how large a gardening area they are caring for.
